Metal

Metal care

Timothy Oulton offers a wide array of metal finishes, each bringing a different mood and style to your interior. From the raw, industrial look of Spitfire to the faded grandeur of Vintage Brass or the warmth and glamour of Rose Gold, our high-quality metal finishes are all achieved using tried and tested methods by our master craftsmen.

Metal is generally a very durable material. Take care to prevent scratches to your metal furniture as they can be extremely difficult and sometimes impossible to remove. Many of our metal finishes, such as Aero, are purposefully created to look distressed and aged, with marks and dents added to the metal to convey a strong sense of character and history. Other finishes, such as Shiny Steel, have a very smooth appearance and may show scratches more noticeably.

Metal finishes & general maintenance

Aluminium

This smooth and sleek finish is durable and hardwearing, adding modern, cool tones to your interior.

Spitfire

Spitfire is an original signature finish by Timothy Oulton, inspired by the World War II fighter plane and characterised by its multi-riveted construction and interlocking aluminium panels. A five-stage finishing process creates the impression of worn, distressed metal.

Aero

Inspired by the world of aviation, Aero is crafted from aluminium that has been put through a time-intensive hand-finishing process to distress the metal for a rustic, industrial feel. Small dents and scuffs are added for an authentically worn look, evoking a storied past of travel and adventure.

Caring for Aluminium, Spitfire and Aero
  • Wipe up spills immediately using a clean dry cloth.
  • Clean regularly using a soft cloth dampened and a diluted solution of mild detergent and warm water. Dry with a soft cloth.
  • Do not use bleach or use any detergent containing sulphuric or hydrochloric acid.
  • Avoid the use of steel wool or scouring pads as these may scratch and damage the metal surface.
  • Protect metal table tops by using coasters and placemats to prevent marks, stains and scratches.
  • Aluminium will naturally oxidise, forming a thin oxide layer on its surface, which gives this material its excellent anti-corrosion properties. The natural reaction of oxidisation will cause a slight black residue on the cloth when you clean your furniture. This is perfectly normal and not a sign of defect.
  • To remove stains we recommend the cleaning product Brasso. To retain the matt finish of Aero and Spitfire products be careful not to over buff when using Brasso.
Oxidised Brass

This is a brass plated finish specially created to look like solid brass that has been slightly tarnished over time. This gives the products a wonderful vintage look, conveying a sense of age and a storied past. Strong, hardwearing and non-corrosive, our Oxidised Brass finish does not require regular polishing.

Shiny Brass

Popular throughout history for its beautiful golden colour, brass gives a wonderful vintage look. Shiny Brass has a glossy shine, while Brushed Brass has a more subtle, modern look. Both are brass-plated, and therefore do not require the regular polishing required for solid brass. Strong, hardwearing and non-corrosive.

Flat Brass

This brass-plated finish has a smooth, matt appearance and has been specially created to look like real brass that has slightly tarnished over time, featuring deep grey antiquing along the edges. Strong, hardwearing and non-corrosive, our Flat Brass finish does not require the regular polishing of real brass.
