According to folklore, the chesterfield sofa was born in the 1700s, when a highly inventive bloke – Lord Stanhope, the Fourth Earl of Chesterfield, is reported to have tackled the bothersome problem of creasing one’s suit when seated, by commissioning a local craftsman to design a comfortable sofa that would keep gentlemen’s garments crease-free. Today, Timothy Oulton's Chesterfield Redux reinterprets the chesterfield's tufted silhouette in bold, edgy finishes for an irreverent take on a classic.
THE REBELLIOUS ICON
The Westminster Button sofa in Jack'dN Brok'n has all the daring hallmarks of Timothy Oulton coupled with authentic handcraftsmanship. This innovative finish is created from aniline leathers that have been overpainted with the Union Jack graphic and then heavily distressed by skilled master craftsmen. Simple wooden and serrated tools are used to score, scratch and break the surface of the leather on the finished piece, for an extreme, heavily distressed look.

Hand-tufted classics
Tim Oulton was always obsessed with Chesterfields. When he was working in the antiques industry back in the early days, he would buy any Chesterfield sofa put in front of him – even the broken ones, using his knowledge of materials and craftsmanship to restore them to new. Pictured here, antique Chesterfields procured by Tim and sold through our sister company Rare by Oulton. Today, this passion continues to burn strong in Tim's son Oli, complementing the Chesterfield's authenticity of materials and craftsmanship with a fresh energy to shake off its old-fashioned persona and get some modern attitude.
