Lighting care

Timothy Oulton’s Lighting Collection is handcrafted from K9 optical grade glass, clearer and lighter than crystal, and polished glass, depending on the collections. Taking inspiration from Georgian England to Art Deco to mid-century design, classic forms are reinvented with fresh, modern energy to create an iconic collection of bold and inspiring pieces. Every light is individually made, employing artisanal techniques that have been tried and tested over the generations. Each piece is engineered to ensure easy maintenance. Always make sure the power supply is switched off before handling your light, and avoid turning your pendant or chandelier around as you clean it.

General maintenance

Optical grade glass
  • Dust regularly with a clean, soft and dry lint-free cloth.
  • Wipe up any spills immediately
  • Regularly clean with a soft, lint-free cloth dampened in a water solution of mild detergent and white vinegar. Wipe dry. This will help keep the glass shiny.
  • Avoid the use of chemical and abrasive cleaners.
  • Do not use steel wool or scouring pads as they may scratch the surface of the glass.
Polished glass
  • Clean regularly with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Wipe dry with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Wipe up spills immediately
  • Glass cleaner may be used on clear glass, do not use on glass with a coloured finish. Take care not to spray the metal frame with the glass cleaner.
  • Avoid the use of chemical and abrasive cleaners.
  • Do not use steel wool or scouring pads as they may scratch the surface of the glass.
Iridescent glass
  • Dusting regularly with a light feather duster or wipe with a damp cloth to keep your light looking clean.
  • Clean with distilled water, which will not leave streaks behind. Wipe dry with a clean dry microfibre cloth.
  • Avoid the use of chemical and abrasive cleaners, steel wool or scouring pads, as these may scratch the glass.
  • Use white vinegar to remove stubborn stains. Then wipe with a clean, dry microfiber cloth to remove the vinegar residue.
Natural metal/Matt Brass/Light Brass/Plated Brass/Matt Black/Matt Natural/Dark Bronze frame
  • Clean regularly with a clean, soft, slightly damp cloth. Wipe dry.

Polished glass/Prism Glass
  • Clean regularly with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Wipe dry with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Wipe up spills immediately
  • Glass cleaner may be used on clear glass, do not use on glass with a coloured finish. Take care not to spray the metal frame with the glass cleaner.
  • Avoid the use of chemical and abrasive cleaners.
  • Do not use steel wool or scouring pads as they may scratch the surface of the glass.

Special note on rust

Many of our lighting frames are constructed using iron with a metal plating. Although iron is hardwearing it is very susceptible to rust, over time the iron will oxidise when exposed to oxygen and water in the air and rust may come to the surface. This is a natural property of iron and cannot be prevented. Environmental factors such as high humidity can accelerate oxidisation.
