Inspired by the charm and romance of a past era of long, luxurious voyages, the Timothy Oulton Trunk Collection takes the nostalgic travel trunk of yesteryear and transforms it into a timeless range of coffee tables, chests and side tables, blending classic detailing with a contemporary edge through Timothy Oulton’s unique hand-finishes.
Founder Tim Oulton has always had an obsession with vintage luggage. Upon leaving school at 18, he worked in his father’s antiques shop and started selling old leather suitcases and trunks. The leather on the suitcases had taken on a beautiful sheen from the greases and waxes that had built up over time due to constant handling, and scratches had been collected as mementos from each journey. Tim says, “I just loved the handcraftsmanship. I was amazed at the quality of the stuff that the British made over 300 years, the incredible detail that went into each trunk – right down to the locks and handles.”
Over the years Tim has collected many antique trunks at auctions and flea markets which have inspired the Timothy Oulton Trunk Collection, including one owned by the Duke of Cumberland dating back to the 1700s, as well as a prized selection of vintage Goyard and Louis Vuitton luggage.
Translating the trunk into modern, functional furniture pieces, the Timothy Oulton Trunk Collection is impeccably handcrafted using simple tools and time-honoured construction methods. Classic hallmarks include the finest sprung locks, hand-applied studwork, wooden banding and hand-finished leather handles. Each design stands out from the crowd in a creative choice of finishes, from hand-distressed leathers to steel and brass, eccentric cowhide and hand-painted flags.
The Ampleforth collection takes its name from Ampleforth College, Tim’s alma mater in North Yorkshire, where he credits much of his inspiration and design influence. Available as a coffee table, sideboard, chest, and side table. Each piece features a lift-up lid for extra storage.
Stonyhurst College was founded in 1593 and remains one of the UK’s most prestigious boarding schools. An adaptation of the Ampleforth collection, Stonyhurst similarly transforms Timothy Oulton’s travel-inspired trunks into functional furniture, but does not include a lift-up lid unlike Ampleforth.
Timothy Oulton’s very first designed trunk, Paris truly speaks to the heritage of the brand with its coalescence of tradition and modernity. With a top measuring 40cms x 40cms, Paris is compact enough to suit any space, followed by the roomier London trunk, and the largest of the three, the White Star trunk. These trunks are perfect as a side table, bedside table, or as an accent piece anywhere in the home.
