The Perfect Listening Lounge
– 27 Apr. 2018 –
Imagine hanging out with friends at one of New York’s coolest townhouses, lounging on the sofa and listening to music, catching a movie…and then imagine amplifying this experience to the most insanely comfortable sofa, the most inspiring visual backdrop, the most intensely exquisite audio experience.
Welcome to “the perfect listening lounge”, designed by Timothy Oulton at the iconic World of McIntosh Townhouse.
The Arts of Sound, Style, & Hosting
Sharing a passion for cutting-edge design coupled with values of handcraftsmanship and heritage, Timothy Oulton and pioneering sound makers the World of McIntosh are both driven by another common quest: a quest to create unforgettable experiences for their customers, something that goes far beyond just the product.
Following previous collaborations, the McIntosh Group engaged Timothy Oulton to furnish and style the lobby and third floor of its New York HQ, combining the art of sound with a captivating visual backdrop and authentic hosted experience.
A Storied Setting in a Former Art Gallery
Located in the bustle of SoHo, the Townhouse has a storied past, having once supplied electrical power to the city, and later housing an art gallery in the 1980s and 90s. Today, the historic five-storey building serves as an invite-only venue where guests are able to experience the McIntosh Group brand’s premier products.
Arriving at the newly furnished lobby lounge, you are immediately immersed in an intimate, welcoming atmosphere where rugged elegance meets urban sophistication. Exposed pipes, raw brick and atmospheric black walls retain the building’s industrial heritage, contrasted with sleek, modern furnishings. Mid-century inspired Wall Street chairs invite conversation around the epic Junk Art coffee table, while more industrial elements feature in the Aviator Blackhawk desk and Tracks console.
The Ultimate Sensory Experience
Ascend the metal staircase to the third floor – the Townhouse’s show-stopping hosting area and the very heart and soul of the building. Grand architectural features set the tone, with dramatic high ceilings, exposed brick walls and an ornate original stone fireplace, above which a large cinema screen unfurls during atmospheric movie nights. In the furnishings, a juxtaposition of cool, dark tones and sleek, polished pieces perfectly balance classic and contemporary glamour.
The Shabby sectional sofa is the epitome of effortless luxe, configured in a sociable horseshoe shape, while the back-lit Bio Hazard bar cabinet and Rod floor lamps radiate a soft ambient glow. Another intimate area features iconic quilted Saddle Chairs, once again blending notes of heritage with modern design.
For the many events held at the Townhouse, the Iceberg dining table sets the scene for fun yet formal dining, while the speakeasy-inspired Hudson sideboard in rich Fury leather houses everything needed for a great night in – right down to the hidden sunken ice bucket for that bottle of champagne.
A Word from Tim…
Tim Oulton: “We wanted to create a fully immersive experience, somewhere to escape the outside world and let your senses take over. From the inspiring visual backdrop to the rich tactile materials, to the incredible audio experience, all of these carefully crafted parts culminate in what we hope is the perfect listening lounge.”
