The design industry’s most anticipated event in New York kicked off this month at the prestigious New York Design Center, home to Timothy Oulton’s brand new Manhattan gallery.
American writer Orson Welles said: “Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn”. And he should know, he married Rita Hayworth after all. Seven decades later, we’re still with Orson on this one, so we invited a group of sizzling Hong Kong ladies to an evening of fine wine, good company and of course, great style.
Just ahead of Mother’s Day, it seemed like the perfect time to celebrate the modern woman and indulge in some treats from our discerning partners. The St. Francis Street gallery in Wanchai opened its doors to a crowd of around 100 discriminating ladies and welcomed them into three storeys of pure pleasure: Bespoke Belgian chocolates and beer from The Artist, exquisite jewellery from The 9th Muse, wine and champagne from Wine Etc and sensory indulgences from Jo Malone London. Our Honorary Ambassador and Managing Editor of Sassy Media Group, Dervla Louli, joined the evening and dished out her hottest tips on where to celebrate Mother’s Day in the city.
Small in size, big in personality, Hong Kong has got glamour and grit in equal measure. There’s a really genuine authenticity to its colourful streets and vibrant energy. And this also threads through into Hong Kong’s women, who aren’t afraid to show their own style. This masculine femininity resonates with Timothy Oulton furniture, often juxtaposing the rugged with the elegant, the raw with the romantic, reinterpreting classic ideas into a strong, modern viewpoint.
As the ladies stepped into the cosy St Francis Street gallery – some accompanied by some equally stylish men – Mr Temptation and Mr Generous from The Artist stood ready to greet them with bespoke chocolates. Nibbling on rich and creamy salted buttered caramel and sesame and dark chocolate pieces, smiles were raised by the model train chugging its way around the stand, carrying its precious chocolate cargo. Everything this Belgian duo do always seems to have an element of fun to it.
On the first floor, Wine Etc were waiting with glasses of champagne and other fine wines including the hotly anticipated Miraval Rose from Brad and Angelina’s estate. Guests tucked into platters of cheese and settled onto the Shabby sectional for a good chat. Attracting attention on the Museum dining table, The Artist’s Belgian craft beer made for a conversational centrepiece, dressed in bespoke bowler hat labels on a bed of grass with mini figurines. Across the room, a crowd was gathering around the Axel dining table, trying on the exquisite jewellery collection from Hong Kong boutique The 9th Muse.
And the fun didn’t stop there. Upstairs on the second floor, a plethora of luxurious Jo Malone perfumes were laid out on the cool, sleek Marble coffee table. Ladies lounged on the super-comfy Dex sofa for a hand massage as heady fragrances of English Pear and Freesia, and Lime Basil and Mandarin, filled the air.
Just as everyone was feeling very chilled, the lucky draw was announced and excitement started to spark in the room. Some real stand-out prizes from each partner were delightfully received by the winners, including a Timothy Oulton Keats clutch from the new Deconstructed range.
The night certainly lived up to its Style and the City theme. Great individual style has everything to do with personality and nothing to do with the latest trend. If you love it and it means something to you then go for it, it really doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.
