Storytelling noun The art of telling stories. Stories are very important to us at Timothy Oulton. It’s not that we give each piece its own twee story – more that the process of bringing it into being has to have some meaning.
In the heart of Downtown L.A. at the iconic Los Angeles Athletic Club, a private party was in full swing to celebrate the reopening of the Blue Room lounge and bar, designed by Timothy Oulton, and to hail the debut of the club’s new customised whisky experience.
In 1912, the Blue Room was launched at the Los Angeles Athletic Club (LAAC), attracting some of L.A.’s most influential movers and shakers including Walt Disney and Clark Gable. In 2015, the Blue Room was resurrected as a “club within a club” with the creative vision of Timothy Oulton, to welcome a new generation of L.A.’s finest.
Following its temporary closure last year, allowing the LAAC to continue its multi-million dollar renovations on the floor above, the Blue Room recently marked its official reopening. Timothy Oulton and the LAAC welcomed 40 guests for the exclusive evening, along with The Macallan who was at the ready with cocktail accoutrements to shake up a whisky storm.
Guests stealthily entered the modern speakeasy through the trick bookcase on the floor below and climbed the secret stairwell – once used to store liquor during the days of Prohibition. Inside, the atmosphere was abuzz as glasses clinked, conversation flowed and music filled the room.
It was a relaxed vibe under the glow and sparkle of Timothy Oulton’s signature Crystal chandelier. Guests lounged on the cosy Chesterfield sofas and classic leather wingback chairs, while others mingled by the Boston dining table, covered with cheese platters, flickering candles and fresh red roses. The crowd was surrounded by heritage, from the walls heavily layered with the LAAC’s sporting memorabilia and historical photography to Timothy Oulton’s Pillars of Knowledge and Match Point installation, crafted from vintage wooden tennis rackets.
The sophisticated yet personal feel of the club has now been cranked up a notch with The Macallan’s new customized whisky cart, built exclusively for the Blue Room. Offering members a tailored experience, any of The Macallan’s thoughtfully curated whiskies can be brought to guests tableside and refashioned as they watch, choosing from: Neat, On the Rocks, Down in an Old-Fashioned, Up in a Manhattan, Frozen in a Julep, or Frothy in a Sour.
As guests experienced the new bar cart service and reacquainted themselves with the club, a toast was raised with speeches from the LAAC’s Assistant General Manager Cory Hathaway, Kieron Elliot from The Macallan and Javier Hernandez from Timothy Oulton. Cheers to an exciting new chapter of the iconic Blue Room.
