Timothy Oulton’s master artisans push their craft with the audacious Saddle Chair in Buck’dn Brok’n leather. Not for the faint-hearted, this richly textured hand-finished leather features scores, scratches, worn and burnished surfaces, all of which hint at a storied past.
The Saddle Chair is one of Timothy Oulton’s most iconic designs, handcrafted from a distinctive saddle-shaped frame clad in quilted leather reminiscent of old country jackets. In a further homage to its equestrian roots, the chair is fitted with stirrups either side. The Saddle Chair has always stood out for its bold disposition, but Buck’dN Brok’n leather is its most daring guise to date.
Straddling the heritage of elegant sporting pursuits such as racing and polo with the more rugged, red-blooded world of rodeo, the Saddle Chair Buck’dN Brok’n is imbued with a sense of a life fully lived, and owes its inspiration to some well-used, well-loved cowboy chaps that Tim Oulton picked up from a country dealer in Wyoming. During that exchange, the dealer admitted his reluctance in letting the chaps go, and so Tim gave one of the legs back to him, so that he could make a pair of mini chaps for his young son. The remaining piece of beaten-up leather was the beginning of Buck’dN Brok’n.
It takes Timothy Oulton’s craftsmen many hours to create such a complex finish, working on the leather over and over again by hand using simple tools such as serrated blades and hot irons. The craftsmen blend this cracked and damaged look with the leather’s natural softness to create a totally unique, luxurious experience. And like any person of good character who has withstood the trials of life, every crack and scar in the leather captures a sense of strong silent resilience and endurance, making it a material for the ages.
