We’re thrilled to announce the appointment of Jonathan Thompson – intrepid traveller, daredevil and award-winning British journalist – as our Global Dinner Party Critic. This follows a worldwide search in partnership with luxury launches site VeryFirstTo.

Jonathan’s daring, authentic and discerning characteristics reflect those of Timothy Oulton, making him stand out from hundreds of competitive applicants from all over the world. His fearless achievements include being the UK’s most experienced male wing walker and undertaking a recent expedition to Antarctica to mark the centenary of Shackleton’s Endurance expedition.

His other accolades include winning both best British and best European Feature awards at the prestigious British Guild of Travel Writers’ awards in 2013. Jonathan’s worked in journalism for 16 years, travelling the world in search of exciting stories and contributing regularly to The Guardian, Sunday Times Travel magazine, Conde Nast Traveller and Tatler.

He says the strangest thing he’s ever eaten at a dinner party was an eel he had to catch and kill first. Another memorable dinner party incident involved giving talk show host Jimmy Fallon a piggy back round a beach bar.

In a quest to revive the lost art of hosting, Timothy Oulton launched the search for a Global Dinner Party Critic on 13th August in partnership with luxury launches site VeryFirstTo. Jonathan’s assignment begins this week with a show-stopping dinner party for 100 guests in China, at Timothy Oulton’s annual At Home Show. Rather than being solely a food critic, he will instead review the entire experience, from menu and interior to music, welcome, atmosphere, guests and conversation. In the coming weeks, Jonathan will travel to L.A., Amsterdam and New York to review a further three dinner parties, with each one built around a different selection from the Timothy Oulton interiors collection, exploring different expressions of modern hosted dining.
