Storytelling noun The art of telling stories. Stories are very important to us at Timothy Oulton. It’s not that we give each piece its own twee story – more that the process of bringing it into being has to have some meaning.
If there’s one thing that Tim Oulton gets really excited about, it’s spending time with our customers and getting to know them. So off Tim went to New York, where we invited 13 VIP customers to an exclusive evening with the man himself, over drinks, dinner and great conversation.
The evening began at the New York gallery at ABC Carpet and Home, where Tim warmly greeted the intimate crowd and reiterated how special they, like all our customers, are to him. Champagne corks were popped, fine cheese (British of course) was cut, and Timothy Oulton Ambassadors from the gallery hosted the crowd as they mingled. Tim enjoyed meeting everyone and the noise of animated chatter filled the room. It was relaxed, it was fun, and it was just the start of a great night.
Soon everyone made their way to the historic Meatpacking District, where dinner was served in the private room of Valbella restaurant, known for its exquisite Northern Italian fare. The long candle-lit table was adorned with fresh red roses in vintage trophies and bowler hats, music set the perfect tone, and everyone was welcomed with a hearty toast from Tim.
Every great dinner party has a vibrant mix of characters at the table, and this night was no exception. Our group came from all walks of life, including the worlds of media, modelling, interior design, finance, and real estate. Timothy Oulton Ambassadors joined the gathering, and stories were swapped over a sumptuous Mediterranean feast which included tender veal tenderloin in a smooth and creamy truffle sauce, and melt-in-the-mouth Black Angus Filet Mignon. Tim changed seats throughout the meal so that everyone had the opportunity to chat to him.
Conversation flowed – as did the delectable wine pairings – and Tim opened up about his history in antiques and what inspires his unique designs. Perhaps one of our favourite stories of the evening was one of romance – a tale of ‘love at first Shabby’. It was the story of how two of our dinner guests had met at a mutual friend’s home, where they got talking whilst sat on the Timothy Oulton Shabby sofa. Their romance bloomed and one day, whilst out shopping for furniture, they were sat in Restoration Hardware on a sofa called Cloud, also designed by Tim. When the gentleman asked his loved one if she preferred the Cloud or the Shabby, she replied “Shabby”. Upon realizing they were soul mates when it came to their taste in furniture, he proposed then and there.
Tim has always said that what drives him is more than just creating incredible furniture, it’s a passion to create spaces where people can connect and have a great experience. To hear first-hand from the people who choose to have Timothy Oulton pieces in their homes, interacting with their everyday lives, was simply an absolute pleasure. At the end of a great evening, goodbyes were said, hands were shaken, and friendships had certainly been forged.
