Bikers and Bowler Hats
– 3 Oct. 2014 –
It was a hot Sunday in Hong Kong on 28th September, and underneath the blue skies a rather unusual spectacle was bringing local residents out of their apartments as a stream of vintage motorcycles pulled up outside Timothy Oulton, St Francis Street.
Genteel chaps and chapesses were dressed up in their finery to celebrate this year’s Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, led by the fine fellows at Angry Lane.
Now we like to think ourselves as rather distinguished at Timothy Oulton, with our British heritage and penchant for bowler hats and afternoon tea. We constantly celebrate the modern gent and we’re rather partial to a bit of retro cool, so needless to say DGR struck a chord with us.
At 9.30am, you could hear the purr of the bikes before you could see them. The group arrived at the Timothy Oulton gallery for the start of the ride and everyone got busy checking out each other’s vintage beauties and dapper outfits. Each rider was given a special Timothy Oulton gift bag which came complete with a smart leather bow tie and jovial stick-on moustache to get into the spirit of the day.
It was time for the ride to begin, and after a group effort was needed to push some of the older models up the hill, a scenic route ensued to Tai Tam Reservoir where we were waiting with cool refreshments. Riders enjoyed a welcome pit stop on our Bensington Union Jack sofa which proved a great backdrop for a few selfies in a Bowler hat.
As the dapper ensemble took a leisurely ride back to St Francis Street we had ice cold beers at the ready courtesy of Peroni and the group were greeted by the delicious smell of gourmet burgers cooking on the grill – a treat from the guys at Butcher’s Club. Friends and family came to celebrate and a lucky draw topped off the afternoon as guests were hosted in the daring and authentic surrounds of the Timothy Oulton gallery. A gentlemanly finish to a very distinguished day, with masses of fun had by all.
From now until 12th October look out for our 10 super cool limited edition New Yorker satchels, customized exclusively for the ride and available at our Hong Kong galleries only. A percentage of proceeds will go to DGR’s prostate cancer charity.
