ABOUT TIMOTHY

PHILOSOPHY

The guiding philosophy behind Timothy Oulton is simple: to be best in class.
“I think it is a love for design and a desire to see things done the best way possible that keeps me motivated,” says founder, Timothy Oulton. “In everything that we do, I want it to be unique, to be best in class, or I won’t do it.”

A tribute to Tim’s antiques background, each piece is handcrafted using time-honoured techniques , while Tim’s extraordinary attention to detail means that every bolt, every stitch, and every detail counts. No two products are ever alike and each piece is imbued with its own distinct personality. “It’s the raw finish that makes it contemporary and relevant. It’s furniture that you interact with, that you look at and smile,” says Tim.

Reinterpreting timeless, classic designs with a modern perspective, heritage and longevity form the core of the brand’s values. “We’re the Rolling Stones of the furniture world,” explains Tim, “It’s about taking something from the past and making it relevant.”

Inspired by the past with a view towards the future, Timothy Oulton is a collection of distinct individuality. “We have a point of view,” says Tim, “There is a character, a soul to what we do. There is an authenticity to the product because of the materials we use, the design we have, the link to heritage and antiques. It is completely unique.”

HISTORY

Timothy Oulton, founder and Creative Director of his eponymous brand, is a master of reinvention and a pioneer of design.

Tim’s story dates back to his childhood days in Manchester, where he grew up surrounded by antiques from his father’s business, Halo Antiques. “Working with my parents over the holidays and living in a setting like that, you can’t fail to be influenced,” recalls Tim. Yet Tim never planned to build his own career in the industry. Upon leaving school at 18 with no job prospects, Tim took his father’s advice to try his hand at antiques. “I thought, ‘I’ll do this for a year or so, and then I’ll become a banker or something serious,’ And then, suddenly, I got the bug,” says Tim. Having inherited a keen eye for detail and an appreciation for classic, timeless design, Tim found himself captivated by, above all, the exquisite quality of the antiques that came from meticulous, time-honoured handcraftsmanship.

Following five successful years of selling restored homeware items in the US, Tim, along with his brother, expanded the business into the UK, where they achieved sales of over £1 million within the first year. Then the company started supplying to respected UK furniture retailer, Carpenters, where sales nearly doubled in one year on pine tables alone.

That same year, Tim officially took the helm at Halo, repositioning the company to focus on the recreation of antique pieces with a modern viewpoint. “I couldn’t see any mileage staying in antiques. It’s not always fully relevant,” explains Tim, “Now, antiques reinvented, that’s what people are interested in.” Handcrafted with only the best traditional techniques and fabrications, each Timothy Oulton piece is inspired by the past but reconceived from a contemporary perspective, producing a collection that is uniquely authentic and pushes the boundaries of furniture design. These values have formed the foundation for the brand over the years and continue to be a vital part of Tim’s collections today.

Timothy Oulton Collections are currently available at Timothy Oulton stores in Singapore, Beijing, and Barbados, as well as at specialty retailers worldwide, including HD Buttercup, and ABC Carpet & Home in the United States and El Corte Ingles in Spain. More stores are being planned increasingly in more cities.
